With the universe as the source of inspiration, the Celestial exhibit is a series of figurative and abstract multimedia works that explore the metaphor of creation. The themes of space, stars and astrology will be cosmically swirled into an exhibit. During a three-week residency Coulter will work with select Appalachian State students to complete the site-specific installation in the Mayer Gallery.
About the artist
Dare Coulter is an award-winning artist, muralist and sculptor. Her primary mission is to create positive and magical imagery of Black people and families. She has illustrated five children’s books to date–with two more currently in development. Dare was Raleigh, North Carolina’s first-ever artist in residence, and was commissioned by University of North Carolina Wilmington to create a monument celebrating Black lives. Her public art pieces are primarily found in the NC Research Triangle as well as other locations across the state. Coulter hopes to have a mural on every continent within the next five years as well as a series of sculptures, depicting Black joy, all over the world.
