Join us for a conversation inspired by the belonging to place: The Creative Community & Artistic Legacy of bell hooks exhibition and the visual art, writing, and legacy of author, activist, and critic, Dr. bell hooks. Dr. Linda Strong-Leek, close friend of bell hooks’s and Director of the bell hooks Institute at Berea College, will share about the mission and re-opening of the bell hooks Institute, followed by an ARTtalk by exhibiting artist Chanell Stone. Centered on hooks’s statement that “everything that I am was made in the ground of Kentucky,”1 the talk will examine how geography, land, and local community inform creative work and regional connections.

About the Speakers
Dr. Linda Strong-Leek, close friend of bell hooks and Director of the bell hooks Institute.
Chanell Stone earned her M.F.A. in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego and B.F.A. in Photography from the California College of the Arts. She has exhibited in institutions across the United States and internationally. Her debut solo exhibition Natura Negra was presented at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco from 2019 to 2020. Recent exhibitions include presentations at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Carnegie Museum of Art; San Diego Museum of Art; Pier 24 Photography, and Museo Cabañas, Guadalajara. She will be presenting her new solo exhibition at the San Diego Museum of Art in Spring 2027. Stone’s practice has been featured in The New York Times, NPR, FOAM and Aperture. www.chanellstone.com
