Join guest curator Saloni Mahajan alongside a panel of saree wearers representing the Indian, Nepali, and Bangladeshi diaspora. Together, the panelists will explore the saree not merely as a garment or museum artifact, but as a living, breathing archive of personal memory, migration, and cultural resilience.

About the Speaker

Portrait of Saloni MahajanSaloni Mahajan is an Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts (Costume and Makeup) at Appalachian State University. Her work brings together practice of costume design and scholarly research on performances. She began her career in fashion in India before working in costume departments for Bollywood films. Her on-set experience inspired her to pursue formal training in Costume Design at UCLA. She is currently completing her PhD in Performance Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Saloni has designed costumes for theatre, dance, and films across the United States and India. Through her creative practice and scholarship, she seeks to draw greater attention to the role of costume and clothing in storytelling across a range of performance contexts, from stage and screen to the street.
