Victor Ekpuk is an established Nigerian artist based in Washington, DC whose art responds to his cultural background, the realities of his homeland, and his experiences as a global artist. “The central theme of my work is the exploration of the relationships, challenges and responses to changes that characterize the human condition.”
Victor Ekpuk will be holding a two-day drawing performance in the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts’ Mayer Gallery on April 3 and 4 from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. with a break between 12:30-1:30 p.m. All visitors are welcome to stop by anytime during these hours to watch him in the gallery.

About the artist
Victor Ekpuk’s art, which began as an exploration of nsibidi “traditional” graphics and writing systems in Nigeria, has evolved to embrace a wider spectrum of meaning that is rooted in African and global contemporary art discourses.
Guided by the aesthetic philosophy nsibidi, where sign systems are used to convey ideas, Ekpuk re-imagines graphic symbols from diverse cultures to form a personal style of mark making that results in the interplay of art and writing.
