The Halpert Biennial ’07 is a national, juried two-dimensional art competition and exhibition program designed to recognize new works by emerging and established artists residing in the United States. It has grown wonderfully over the years and features some of the most exciting new visual art being produced in the country. All visual artists currently residing in the United States, at least 18 years of age, and working in two-dimensional media are eligible to enter the Halpert Biennial ’07. Any original, two-dimensional works of art including paintings, drawings, prints, photography, mixed media, and works using traditional and non-traditional materials are considered for the juroring process. Recent exhibitions have included more computer-generated art and images but the Halpert’s strength is in the featured artists’ reliance on traditional techniques and mediums used in innovative ways. The awards for the competition amount to $5,000: Two Juror’s Awards in the amounts of $1,500 and $1,000, a Director’s Award in the amount of $1,500, and purchase awards to total $1,000.
The Halpert Biennial is a visual art component of An Appalachian Summer Festival.

About the juror
Terry Suhre is a native of Southern Illinois, growing up on the banks of the Mississippi River near the small town of Chester, Illinois. He holds a B.F.A. in Painting from the University of Illinois – Champaign/Urbana (1976) and an M.F.A. in Painting (1980) from Southern Illinois University – Carbondale. Suhre has held the position of Director at Gallery 210 and Associate Professor (unaffiliated) at the University of Missouri – St. Louis since August of 1996. Prior to Suhre’s appointment at UMSL he was director of the Catherine Smith Gallery at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina, for five years, where in addition to the curatorial, administrative and teaching duties he oversaw the visual arts component of An Appalachian Summer Festival. Suhre began his career at the Illinois State Museum in Springfield.
Since 1983 he has curated over 50 exhibitions. In addition to his gallery duties Suhre serves on several community arts boards and is active as a guest curator and juror.
In 2003 Gallery 210 was voted best art gallery by the Riverfront Times annual “Best of St. Louis” issue. And in 2001 the Riverfront Times annual “Best of St. Louis” issue cited Suhre as Best Curator in St. Louis. Suhre lives in Kirkwood, Missouri with his wife Laurie and son Jackson. His hobbies are fly-fishing and folk music.
