Appalachian State University’s Chair Competition is a chair design and fabrication competition organized to promote and encourage the exploration of contemporary production seating.
The 2014 competition focuses on the theme “NEW.” Each designer will incorporate new and innovative materials, techniques and styling into their process. An award reception will take place on January 18 from 4-6pm and is free and open to the public.

Todd Campbell
Todd is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP Design School with an Interior Design Degree. After graduation he went on to work with architectural design firms in Boston, Chicago and Cincinnati. His interiors experience was wide ranging from the large corporate campuses to award winning health care environments and even projects for Disney Japan. In 1992 Todd met Jerry Helling of Bernhardt Design on a factory tour and was soon convinced into moving over to product design and becoming the Design Director for Bernhardt Design. For over 20 years Todd has been helping to develop and guide the company’s product and global developments.
Greg Saul
A graduate of the Auburn University School of Industrial Design, Greg Saul has been designing high quality commercial seating and ergonomic furniture for more than twenty five years. Industry awards include a Good Design award, Best of Neocon Gold and Silver awards and Adex Gold and Silver awards. Most recently his seating designs can be found at Highmark in Los Angeles and Jofco in Jasper, Indiana. Working out of Charlotte, North Carolina, his firm Tolleson Saul Design uses state of the art CAD systems and rapid prototyping to explore new solutions for furniture design and manufacturing. Greg has personally been granted more than 30 design and utility patents from the US and European patent offices.
Kelsey Keith
Kelsey Keith is Dwell’s Senior Editor, based in New York. She oversees Dwell’s front-of-book section (market pages, interviews, profiles, and news) and edits and writes feature stories for the magazine. She’s written about design, architecture, and culture for a variety of publications both print- and web-based. She lives in Brooklyn and grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Appalachian State University’s Chair Competition was created to discover and showcase young designers that represent both design innovation and an understanding of product and market. This is a national Chair Design competition open to all degree-granting schools located in the United States. Work from both undergraduate and graduate students is accepted.
